IRI BAT ILUNTASUNEAN GIDATZEKO FAROA.

1-Mendi artean ezkutaturik dagoen paisaia behatzean galdutako naturaren esentziaren

atzetik gabiltza, jadanik joanik dugun haurtzaroko zoriontasunaren bilatzeari ekiten

diogun moduan.

2- Bati baino gehiagori gustatuko litzaiguke hiriko argi guztiak amatatzea, izarrak hobeto

ikusi ahal izateko. Baina aldi berean, beste askoz ere lagun gehiago beldurrak gogorturik

geldi-geldirik eta mugitu ezinik geldituko litzateke. Beldurrak eta beldurraren balizko

ondorioak gobernatzen ditu giza jarrerak gaurko hirietan.

3-Baina sarritan naturak berak ere beldurra sortu egiten du.  Mendiz inguratuta dagoen

hiri honetako ibaiak euriteen euria erruz batu ondoren gainezka egin eta uholde galanta

eragin zuen behin,  hiria urez gainezka hondatuz. Hirugarren edo laugarren pisuetaraino

heldu zen ura batzuetan.  Giza arrazoiak amestutako ordenamenduaren gainetik dago

kasuotan natura, aurreikusi ezin daitekeen eskala batez bere boterea inposatu egiten

duelarik.

4. Mendi artetik herrestaka , bisitariaren begietatik ezkutaturik eta eguzkiak  behin ere

laztandu ez duela doa hor herrestaka ibaia. Geroago, zabaldu eta arteztu egingo da

adimen aurreratuek hiri koadrikulatu eta ordenatu bat eraiki dezaten.

5-Hiri honen gainean ditudan lehen oroitzapenak  hirira hurbildu nintzeneko garaiaz

dira.  Beldurrez  urreratu eta murgildu nintzen, bertan irrist eginez, ibaiak itsasoratzean

itsas mareekin egiten duen antzera.

6-Luzaroan, industri handi, ertain eta txikiek euren zaborra ibaira botatzen zutenez ez

ginen gai  zuen edertasunaz ohartzeko. Bertan zegoen arren, ahazturik geneukan zabor

ubide zikin bailitzan, zulo beltz berezi horietako bat. Itzela da ikusi nahi ez duguna

alboan baztertu eta ahazteko dugun gaitasuna.

7- Orain hiriaren argiak beste alde batera begira daude, erreka ertzean dagoen leku

distiratsu baterantza. Ahazturik eta  bazterturik dauden aldeak, egon badaude baina beste

batzuk dira gaur egun,   turistek ere ez bisitatzeko modukoak  taxisten esanetan.

8-Gehienetan hiria ez dugu  elkarbizitzarako tokia, biziraupenerako baizik.

9-Hiriek, gero eta antz handiagoa dute euren artean;  kale eta enparantzek  antz  izugarria

dute zentro komertzial erraldoi horiekin non  jendea zer erosiko duen ikusteko

paseatzen den.  Badira baita,  lo egiteko baino erabiltzen ez diren toki zenbait, eta badira

azkenik, guztiz ahazturik dauden lekuak.

10- Politika bera ere koadrikulatu egiten da eta bakoitza dagokion laukiaren eremuan

dago. Hirietako proiektuak hitzartu egiten dira, inoiz ez eztabaidatu; bestela ezin baita

ezer aurrera atera, ez ei dago garapenik, beraien iritzian, noski. Izugarri gustatuko

litzaidake niri,  alboko enparantzara abiatzea gu guztiongan eragina izango duen  hiri

proiektu bati buruz  hitz egiteko, eta iritziak eman-entzuteko. Behar bada, parkean behar

diren zuhaitz  motari buruzko akordiorik ezin izango da lortu,  baina egon ziur adostasun

osoa izango dugula honetaz:  parke gehiago behar direla bertan aspertu gaitezen ezer

erosi barik, ez arropa, ez  jateko, ez edari, ez kultura.

11-Etxeek mendiak eskalatzen dituzte; etxeko leihotik gorantza begiratzean lehen

mendia ikusten nuen lekuan gasolina iragartzen duen iragarki argiztatu bat dago.

12-Egunsentiaren argitasunari esker dakusagu  mendi lerroa.

13-Iluntasunak ordea, espazioaren mugak desagertarazten ditu.

FARO PARA GUIAR UNA CIUDAD EN LA OSCURIDAD

01. Cuando miramos un paisaje escondido entre las montañas buscamos en su imagen la esencia de la naturaleza perdida, al igual que buscamos y buscamos en vano la idea de aquella felicidad infantil que ya se fue.

02. A muchas personas nos gustaría que apagaran todas las luces de la ciudad, para poder ver las estrellas, pero otras muchas más personas quedarían paralizadas por el pánico y el terror.  El miedo y la administración del miedo dominan nuestros comportamientos en las ciudades.

03. Pero la naturaleza también siembra a veces su terror. Un río serpentea por esta ciudad rodeada de montañas, unas montañas que un día hicieron de embudo para las lluvias y llegaron a desbordar el río he inundar la ciudad. El agua llegó en ocasiones hasta el tercer o cuarto piso de los edificios. Parece que la naturaleza impone a veces su poder sobre el orden soñado por la razón humana, utilizando una escala imposible de predecir.

04. Ese río que serpentea entre las montañas, se esconde del visitante y atraviesa entre sus curvas la vieja ciudad sin que el sol llegue  a tocarle ni una sola vez. Luego se ensancha y se hace derecha para que las mentes modernas pudieran trazar la nueva ciudad ordenada y cuadriculada.

05. Mis primeros recuerdos de esta ciudad son imágenes  acercándome a ella por donde el río se acerca, entrando en ella tímidamente, dejándome deslizar como ella hasta encontrarme con la marea del mar.

06. Durante mucho tiempo las grandes, medianas y pequeñas industrias lanzaban al río su mierda e impedían que nos fijáramos en su belleza, estaba ahí en el mismo lugar pero permanecía ignorado como una cloaca, era un singular agujero negro. Es curioso como podemos ignorar todo aquello que no queremos ver.

07. Ahora las luces de la ciudad se dirigen hacia otro lado, un lugar muy brillante al borde del agua. Ahora son otras las zonas que permanecen oscuras e ignoradas, incluso los taxistas recomiendan a los turistas no visitarlas.

08. La mayoría de las veces la ciudad no es un lugar para convivir, es un lugar para sobrevivir.

09. Todas las ciudades se van pareciendo entre sí, las calles y plazas cada vez se parecen más a los grandes almacenes y a las superficies comerciales, la gente pasea para ver que compra. Luego hay lugares en los que la gente sólo duerme y hay lugares que permanecen ignorados.

10. La política también se cuadricula, cada cual permanece en su parcela del cuadro, los proyectos de la ciudad se pactan, nunca se debaten. Dicen que de otra manera sería imposible progresar. A mí me gustaría acercarme a la plaza más cercana a opinar con los demás sobre un nuevo proyecto urbanístico que nos va afectar a todos. Quizás no nos pongamos de acuerdo sobre que tipos de árboles hacen falta plantar en los parques, pero si estaremos de acuerdo en que necesitamos más parques en los que podamos aburrirnos sin tener nada que comprar, ni ropa, ni comida, ni bebida, ni cultura.

11. Las casas están escalando las montañas, ahora miro hacia arriba por la ventana de mi casa y donde antes veía una montaña veo un letrero luminoso anunciando gasolina.

12. Es la luz del alba la que hace que las montañas aparezcan.

13. Es la oscuridad la que elimina los límites del espacio

LIGHTHOUSE TO GUIDE A CITY IN DARKNESS

01. When we look at a landscape hidden between the mountains we search in its image for the essence of lost nature, the same as we search and we search in vain for the idea of that infant happiness which has already gone.

02. For many people we would like them to turn all the lights of the city off, to be able to see the stars, but others, many more people, would be paralysed by panic and fear. Fear, and the administration of fear, control our behaviour in the cities.

03. But nature also sometimes sows its terror. A river snakes through this city surrounded by mountains, the same mountains which one day made a funnel for the rains and caused the river to overflow and flood the city. The water at times reached the third or fourth floor of the buildings. It seems that nature sometimes imposes its power over the order dreamed of by the human race, using a scale which is impossible to predict.

04. That river which snakes between the mountains, hides itself from the visitor and crosses between its curves the old city without the sun ever touching it. Later it gets wider and becomes straight so that the modern minds could design the new, ordered and straight-lined, city.

05. My first memories of this city are images of me getting closer to it where the river gets closer, getting into it shyly, letting myself flow like the river until I find myself in the tide of the sea.

06. For a long time the big, medium and small industries used to throw their crap into the river and they used to stop us noticing its beauty, it was there in the same place but it remained ignored like a sewer, it was a singular black needle. It is curious how we can ignore everything we don’t want to see.

07. Now the lights of the city are pointed towards another side, a place very brilliant on the edge of the water. Now there are other areas which remain dark and ignored, the taxi drivers even recommend the tourists not to visit them.   

08. Most of the time the city is not a place to live together in, it is a place to survive in.

09. All the cities are beginning to resemble each other, the streets and squares resemble more and more department stores and shopping centres, the people go for a walk to see what to buy. Then there are places where the people only sleep and there are places which remain ignored.

10. Politics is also drawn up in straight lines, each one staying in their own plot of the picture, the city projects are pacted, never debated. They say that it would be impossible to progress in any other way. For me, I would like to go down to the nearest square to give my opinions, along with the rest, about a new urban project which will affect all of us. Maybe we wouldn’t agree about what type of trees we need to plant in the park, but we will agree that we need more parks in which we can get bored without having anything to buy, neither clothes nor food, nor drink, nor culture.

11. The houses are climbing up the mountains, now I look up through the window in my house and where before I saw a mountain I see a neon sign advertising petrol.

12. It is the light of dawn which makes the mountains appear.

13. It is the darkness which eliminates the limits of space.
